When bestselling celebrity biographer, Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy), is no longer able to get published because she has fallen out of step with current tastes, she turns her art form to deception, abetted by her loyal friend, Jack. Desperate for money, she soon hatches a scheme to forge letters by famous writers and recruits a dubious friend (Richard E.Grant) to help her on a self-destructive cycle of trickery and deceit.
